Dr. Stephanie Edwards Compton Named E&H Outstanding Young Alum

by Billy Chandler

Dr. Stephanie Edwards Compton is the recipient of the 2024 E&H Alumni Association’s A.L. Mitchell Young Alumna of the Year Award.

Dr. Stephanie Edwards Compton, E&H Class of 2016, received her Ph.D. studying ovarian cancer metabolism in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise at Virginia Tech, studying Molecular and Cellular Science. Her research involved investigating obesity, substrate utilization, and metabolism in ovarian cancer. She has finished an ISPP dietetic internship at Virginia Tech and is a registered dietician.

She is doing post doctoral work in cancer research at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. In 2018 she earned a Master’s of Science in Behavioral and Community Science and Dietetics from Virginia Tech.

She is devoted to reducing the gap of communication between scientists and the public, and leads teaching sessions to help other scientists better explain the work they are doing.

Dr. Compton also returned to her alma mater to do the E&H Alumni Homecoming Lecture for students in the fall of 2023 to discuss her work and take questions about the field.

You can read more about Dr. Compton’s work in this story, and you can hear her Homecoming lecture here.

She will receive her award on Emory & Henry Founding Day, March 21, 2024. The public is welcome to attend.
