Join E&H Alumni in Greece and Rome!

In May of 2019, E&H alumni are joining Emory & Henry history professor Dr. Jack Wells on a trip to Greece. More than 20 have signed up for the opportunity to tour Greece with a beloved college professor who teaches Greek history.

On New Year’s Day 2020, the E&H Marching Band will be parading through the streets of Rome for their annual New Year’s Day festivities. E&H Alumni are also planning to be part of that celebration.

The attention on international travel for alumni has several purposes – beyond the obvious excitement of travel abroad!

Nationwide, only around 2% of students study abroad…nearly 37% of E&H students take advantage of the opportunity. Young people who have never been outside of Southwest Virginia have the opportunity to experience lands and cultures far outside their imaginations. E&H students don’t just hear about the psychological effects of the Holocaust: they visit concentration camps in Prague. They don’t just view a Power Point presentation about great Italian art, they go to Italy and experience art in the culture where it was born. They play tennis and soccer on campus…then visit the courts at Wimbleton and the pitch in Manchester. They learn skills for community leadership in the Appalachian Center and then spend a semester in Ireland, doing a service project. They learn the stories of the Greek Gods in an Emory & Henry classroom, then they stand at the Parthenon to look Athena in the Betty Jessee making friends in an Irish pub.eye. In short, this program makes the Emory Experience a whole lot bigger.

Alumni want to celebrate that success, and they want to set an example for travel. And we are fortunate to have the College’s E&H director of international studies helping us with our plans. Dr. Celeste Gaia, gets much of the credit for the success of our E&H students learning the ways of the world. And, she is helping alumni with those experiences, too.

Of course, there will be other great results, like better understanding of other cultures. But, let there be no mistake – everyone is planning on having a good time.
