Dustin Skillman’s Work Featured at Major Event in Baltimore

Dustin Skillman's mosaic that will be shown in Baltimore in January, 2019.Dustin Skillman, (E&H ’15, majored in art and math) is a practitioner of interdisciplinary project-based learning that he explored in his studies at Emory & Henry College. Dustin has two artworks accepted for the Exhibition of Mathematical Art at the Joint Mathematics Meetings held by the National Mathematical Society and The Mathematical Association of America in Baltimore, Maryland, January 16-19, 2019. 

Both of Dustin’s works were created in the studios at Emory & Henry when he was a student. Culture is a 12 x 9 inch aquatint etching print transferred from a copper plate, featuring several gradations altered by the amount of time the copper remained submersed in ferric chloride solution. The precision and rhythmic patterns are confined to a circular form.  Shapes on a Plane is a stained glass work. Skillman says, “Each piece of glass was crushed by a hammer, washed, reassembled and adhered to a clear acrylic panel. Beginning with my concept colors, I used Dustin Skillman at work on a creation that intersects math and art.  Dustin Skillman at work on a creation that intersects math and art. opaque glass to illustrate the properties of reflection, translation, rotation, and origin. Next I filled the remaining space with dark transparent glass.”

According to Skillman, “By combining both math and art, bringing together concepts from each discipline, by way of geometry and symmetry, I have created a body of work that focuses on the simplicity of lines, shape, repetition, and color.”

Generally known as the Joint Mathematics Meetings, the national meetings are held annually for the purpose of advancing mathematical achievement, encouraging research, and providing the communication necessary to progress in the field. These meetings serve to preserve, supplement, and utilize the results of the research of mathematicians throughout the world.
