A Response to the recent vote by the United Methodist Church

Statement from President Jake B. Schrum on the future of the United Methodist Church.

Dear Emory & Henry College Community,

While the United Methodist Church will continue its conversation and review of its recent vote to enforce restrictions on same sex marriage and the ordination of LGTBQ+ individuals in the church, please know that “God’s doors are open to all at Emory & Henry.” In fact, this will be the topic of discussion and reflection today at 4 p.m. in Cole Parlor in Memorial Chapel. I hope your schedule permits you to join the dialogue.

As you know, the vote was a very narrow one, and one that will be critically reviewed and perhaps overturned by the Judicial Council. Any changes would not go in effect until 2020 and church-related institutions are encouraged to remain focused on their mission and ministries. I would add in our case -  to remain focused on love, acceptance and embracing inclusiveness.

In 1968 I had the honor of attending the conference that united the Evangelical United Brethren Church with the Methodist to form The United Methodist Church. Today, just over 50 years later, their unity is at a crossroads leaving many of their constituents to make serious decisions about their futures. It portends to be a very painful and sad time for many in the Methodist connection. My hope is that this decision by the Church in whatever final shape it lands, will draw us closer to each other in a manner that will reaffirm the worth and dignity of all of us.

What won’t waver is Emory & Henry’s commitment to its soul and mission -  one of hard work; service to others; compassionate hearts; open minds; and the acceptance of change. We turn no one away and offer everyone the comfort to explore who they are and what they want to become with the support of our faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and community. For more than 180 years Emory & Henry has protected and supported those who have walked our campus. All persons, regardless of how much money they have or do not have, regardless of where they have traveled or not, regardless of how smart they are or not, regardless of where they are from or where they are not from, regardless of station, position or background, we believe, have within them the gifts, talents, vision, passion and abilities to make a difference in the world and in the lives of their neighbors.

Let’s continue to be the light our world needs at Emory & Henry. Let’s lead by example, with empathy and integrity, and treat each other daily with kindness, warmth and forgiveness. Let’s continue to be the college that changes lives and makes a difference.Let’s continue to be characterized by “our pervasive spirit of generosity.”
