Hubble Uncovers History at Loudon Museum

Layne Hubble recently completed her summer internship at the Loudon Museum in Leesburg, Va. She worked on two different projects related to the history of Leesburg and Loudon County. 

 Layne Hubble is a senior history and political science double major with a museum studies minor. Over this past summer, Hubble has completed an internship with the Loudon Museum in Leesburg, Va. “I researched local history and lore to compile a walking tour for the museum. I am doing two themes: local African American history and one on tavern/Prohibition/drinking culture in the area,” Hubble reflected. “I spent my days searching the web, digging through library archives, and examining old photographs and artifacts in our collections unit. I got to look through old criminal court records from the 1700s to see what the charges and fines were for alcohol consumption.”

The Loudon Museum is best known for preserving and sharing the long history of Loudoun County, all the way back to before the Civil War. They frequently host history lectures and other events that involve the community in their own history. As a history major with a minor in museum studies, Hubble felt very prepared for her internship. “My major in history gave me a base to understand the significance of the objects and themes I dealt with on a daily basis. Additionally, it made me more comfortable with in-depth research— something I did quite a lot of here at the museum,” Hubble said. “My museum studies minor also gave me experience in handling delicate objects and understanding the work that goes into building an exhibit for the public.”

As her internship continued, Hubble became more comfortable with the idea of working in a museum for her career. “At the moment, I think I’d like to look into graduate school to obtain a degree in Museum Studies— but who knows, we’ll see where I end up!”
