Douglas E. Arnold

Visiting Associate Professor Neff Education Center

Dr. Arnold has over four decades of experience in education ranging from public school classroom teaching to public school administration and superintendency to college teaching.

His professional interests include the teaching profession and foundations of education, supervision and instruction of pre-service teachers, block scheduling, effective schools research, comparative education, action research, and classroom management.

Teaching

Dr. Arnold teaches a Seminar in Education course, a Teaching Profession and Foundations of Education course, a Curriculum and Instruction course, and supervises secondary teacher interns.  Dr. Arnold coordinates outreach projects through the Southwest Virginia Public Education Consortium and Foundation as well as regional public school divisions . Dr Arnold serves as program director for the M. Ed. in Professional Studies program.

Research

Dr. Arnold’s dissertation was a comparison of achievement in 7A/B Block Scheduled Schools and 7-Period Traditional Scheduled Schools in Virginia. 

Dr. Arnold was one of ten administrators selected by the Virginia Department of Education to participate in a Study Seminar in Germany, and was selected by Virginia Tech to participate in a Leadership and Ethics Conference at Oxford University, Oxford, England.

Professional Experience

In addition to conducting professional development workshops for public school systems, Dr. Arnold has directed several MSP Math and Science Grants, written articles for the NASSP Bulletin, the American School Board Journal, the International Journal of Instructional Media, and contributed to an article in an Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development publication. One of his articles was reprinted in Practical Action Research: A Collection of Articles, by Corwin Press. Dr. Arnold has twice been named Phi Delta Kappa Southwest Virginia Educator of the Year.  He is a PDK Distinguished Educator.
