March 5, 2020-Letter to Students

Dear Students,

We realize this is a concerning and ever-developing situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) moving through our country and world.

This email contains important information regarding the College’s current planning regarding COVID-19. We will continue to monitor the situation closely. A planning team is meeting regularly to monitor the situation and prepare accordingly. Associate Provost and Dean of Students, Ryan Bowyer, is leading the team of administrators.

We will continue to offer regular updates via email; post them on our new webpage www.ehc.edu/flu, and send updates via LifeSafe. Please take the responsibility to stay educated on the situation as it continues to change and please use good personal hygiene at all times by washing your hands and not touching your face; sneezing in your sleeves, and staying home if you are ill and/or have a fever. (Treat this like the flu.)

Below are updates as of March 5, 2020:

  • The health and well-being of our campus community is our top priority.

  • There are no reported cases of COVID-19 in Virginia.

  • Any member of the campus community that elects to engage in personal travel to any Level 2 or Level 3 country as shown here (or is currently visiting) will be expected to self-quarantine off-campus for a minimum of 14 days and not return to campus unless they are free of symptoms. This includes situations in which the level rises to 2 while on the trip.

  • Students traveling to Level 2 and 3 countries should report their travel as soon as possible before traveling to Ryan Bowyer at rbowyer@ehc.edu.

  • Any group trips (domestic or abroad) should be reported to Katherine Hanshew in the Provost’s office at khanshew@ehc.edu (by faculty or staff leading the trip with a list of attendees).

  • Provost Puglisi will communicate with individual faculty members regarding academic plans for the time those returning students self-quarantine off-campus. This case-by-case handling by Provost Puglisi will help facilitate the process given the specifics of each situation.

  • Please check the website for updates: www.ehc.edu/flu

We encourage everyone to be supportive of one another during this time, including your peers who may have to make difficult decisions about their travel.

As a reminder, any students, faculty and staff who elect to engage in personal travel to any Level 2 or Level 3 country will be expected to self-quarantine off-campus for a minimum of 14 days and not return to campus unless they are free of symptoms. This includes situations in which the level rises to 2 while on the trip. This is crucial for the health and well-being of our campus community, particularly for those who may be immunocompromised. Further information will be forthcoming pending guidance as we learn more.

For questions about reporting travel plans please email Ryan Bowyer at rbowyer@ehc.edu or if you have questions about your specific medical condition, please contact Susan Stanley, Director of Health Services at sstanley@ehc.edu.

For questions about academic plans for students returning from travel to Level 2 and 3 countries, please contact the Provost’s Office at khanshew@ehc.edu.

We will continue to provide frequent updates as the situation unfolds.

Thank you,

Dr. John W. Wells, President
Dr. Mike Puglisi, Provost
Ryan Bowyer, Associate Provost and Dean of Students
