Tracy Lauder leads Ampersand, a college-wide program that supports the E&H student experience—connecting passions to projects that create positive change in the world. She enjoys collaborating with the smart and creative students, faculty, and staff at the college, and she does all she can to support their work.
Some of the things that keep Tracy busy:
• overseeing the work of the Ampersand Center where staff help students create a college experience that leads to a productive and fulfilling career.
• coordinating faculty development programming across various campus constituents.
• collaborating with the offices of Admissions, Institutional Advancement, and Marketing/Communications to promote the college’s academic programs and the work of its students and faculty to both internal and external audiences.
• overseeing events that support the student experience and showcase their work.
• teaching courses in the core curriculum, mass communication, and women’s & gender studies.
• advising students on interdisciplinary majors and connecting them to the faculty and programs that can help them reach their career goals.

Tracy served the college on the mass communications faculty full time for 15 years teaching graphic design, public relations, persuasion theory, and women and media. She also teaches in the core curriculum, notably Transitions I (the first-year seminar) and Connections (the senior capstone course), as well as in the Women’s & Gender Studies program.
Tracy’s research interests have focused on the cultural impact of mass mediated messages—particularly the portrayal of gender, race, sexual orientation, age, and socioeconomic class. Her dissertation tells the story of the startup of Southern Living magazine in 1960s Birmingham.
Before joining the academy full time, Tracy worked at the Birmingham-based Southern Progress Corporation (a Time-Warner subsidiary) in the corporate public relations office and as a travel editor for Southern Living magazine. She also ran a freelance writing and consulting business where she worked for the sales teams of Cooking Light and Weight Watchers magazines, launched the coastal travel magazine Southern Breeze, and provided copy writing and creative direction services for a wide variety of agencies and clients.
