My name is Ryan Anderson. I am a senior biology major who will graduate in May 2021 with a B.S. degree. My current research consists of looking at how kombucha, a fermented drink, will change the permeability of human Caco-2 intestinal cells in vivo. To achieve this, I have cultured Caco-2 cells in the lab as the first stage of my research. Then, I will apply a commercial brand of kombucha to the cells and analyze how the permeability of the cells changes using transepithelial electrical resistance, or TEER. My research is significant because it will show the effect of drinking kombucha on our intestinal cells which is an important barrier in many physiological functions.
