Joy Scruggs

Instructor Health and Human Performance

From 1981 through 2009, not only was Joy Scruggs a faculty member at Emory & Henry, she was also the women’s basketball coach. During her 28 seasons coaching, E&H played in the ODAC Championship game five times and won the ODAC Championship in 1988. Three times she was named ODAC Coach of the Year (1984, 2002, and 2003), and coached countless all conference players, including three who were named ODAC Player of the Year, and one Virginia State Player of the Year. In addition to coaching basketball, for a number of years Scruggs also served a head coach for women’s and men’s Cross Country.

In 2009, Scruggs retired from coaching and moved to full time teaching. As a member of the Physical Education department, her areas of interest include Health, Health Education, Wellness, First Aid and CPR, Sport Management, and Water Safety Instruction. She has developed a Study Abroad course titled “Wide World of Sport,” which will take students to Europe. Professionally, she is a member of the Virginia Association for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (VAHPERD) and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD).

During her undergraduate years at the University of Tennessee, she was a member of the women’s basketball team for four year. Her final season in 1974-1975 was under first-year Coach Pat Summitt.

An active member of the Abingdon Rotary Club, in 2006 Scruggs was named a Paul Harris Fellow for service to the community. In 2007 the Emory & Henry Appalachian Center for Community Service honored her with the Hope Award as an E&H faculty member who makes a positive difference in the lives of others in the classroom, on the court, and in the community. She is also an active member of the Meadowview United Methodist Church and, for a number of years, has served as Lay Leader.
