Joseph Vess

Ampersand Advisor and Programs Coordinator Ampersand Center

Joseph Vess is the Ampersand Advisor and Programs Coordinator, working closely with students, faculty and staff to incorporate project-based learning and e-portfolios into every aspect of the Emory & Henry experience.

Before coming to Emory & Henry, Joseph was a Senior Program Officer and Acting Deputy Director for US Programs at Promundo, an international non-governmental organization which promotes gender equality through research, programming and advocacy. He worked on several domestic initiatives including the adaptation and evaluation of the Program H curriculum for young men in Pittsburgh; and research, interventions, and advocacy to promote involved and non-violent fatherhood in the United States.

He also contributed to Promundo’s work on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) prevention and men’s engagement in crisis, conflict, and post-conflict settings, with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa, including development and implementation of the Living Peace program in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Sierra Leone. He also supported violence prevention and youth development interventions with young men in Lebanon and the former Yugoslavia.

In addition to his work at Emory & Henry, Joseph facilitates healthy fatherhood groups at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority facility in Abingdon for Highlands Community Services. He previously served as Director of Training and Technical Assistance for Men Can Stop Rape, where he trained professionals to engage men and boys in the prevention of SGBV and the promotion of gender equality. In the years prior he also worked for the DC Rape Crisis Center, the War Crimes Research Office at American University, and spent two years as a journalist based in Cairo, Egypt.
