The Executive Assistant to the President and General Counsel serves on the Executive Council and coordinates activities and communication for the group, participates in formulating and administering college policies and developing long-range goals and objectives, directs activities within the Office of the President, coordinates major events and special projects at the College, coordinates meetings of the Board of Trustees, serves as the trustee liaison to the administration, acts as the board’s recording secretary, and provides legal counsel to the College.
Mark Graham returned to Emory & Henry in 2008 following a nearly two-decade legal career in Abingdon, Virginia, which included being a shareholder and director in the law firm of Boucher, Hutton & Graham, P.C.
He obtained his B.A. in history and political science from E&H. Thereafter, he earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law. He has also completed the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.
For more than twenty years, he was involved with the Virginia Community College System, first as an instructor for paralegals at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon and later as a member of its board of directors. In 2002, he was appointed by Virginia’s governor to the fifteen-member State Board for Community Colleges. He was reappointed in 2006 and served as State Board chair in 2007-08.
A past assistant governor for Rotary and past president of the Abingdon Rotary Club, Mark received a Humanitarian Award from the Emory & Henry Alumni Association in 2005 for his leadership in providing a college education at E&H for a former Rotary Exchange Student from Bolivia.
He serves as board president of the Virginia Highlands Small Business Incubator, finance chair of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Abingdon, foundation chair of the Abingdon Rotary Club, and is a board member for the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation. In addition, he is past president of The Crisis Center board of directors in Bristol. He lives in Abingdon with his wife, Tonya, and son, Colin.
